It's Friday.
I don't have to work.
But Max does.
So I have to get up and drive him at 7:45.
I do this for him because I love him. No other reason.
Just thought I'd mention that.
You know, in case you forgot that I hate mornings. Or you thought I'd changed my position on what to do at 7:45 am on days I don't have to work.
Love. Its a mighty powerful thing. It can hoist my lard butt out of bed...
Anyway, on to today's Five on Friday:
Back To School Blues
1. When you were a kid, did you do back-to-school shopping?
Yes.
2. Do you still peruse the back-to-school aisles now that you're grown up?
That's quite an assumption.... that all folks participating in the Five on Friday Meme are all grown up. Lucky for them it just so happens that I AM all growed up. But I really don't like shopping. (Which surprised a teen I was chatting with at Creation. "Really, you don't like shopping?" she asked, boggled.
"Nope", I replied. "Why did you think I would?" I asked.
"Well, the blonde hair. And you're, like a woman..." she replied.)
Back to the question, now that I'm grown up, I'll peruse the back to school aisles with Max and Drew when they decide school-supply shopping can't be put off any longer.
3. What back-to-school item did you just have to have, only later to find out it wasn't as useful as you thought?
Coloured, glittery scotch tape.
4. What is your favorite TV show about school?
Let's change the tense to "What WAS my favorite TV show about school".
Room 222. I liked the guy with the big afro. And I thought Karen Valentine was beautiful.
5. What was your favorite and least favorite part of going back to school?
Least favorite part was the unknown. Not knowing who would be in my classes. Or who would sit near me. Or if I'd catch on to the harder stuff I'd be taught in the new grade.
In elementary school, the favorite part would have been the chance to wear my new school clothes that I wasn't allowed to wear in the summer because we were saving them for school.
After that, in jr high, sr high and BCIT - it would have been the part where I could be with my boyfriend.
Oh crap.
I really wrote that.
The best part about school was seeing my boyfriend.
Oy. Is that true?
I was an "A" student. Surely I loved learning. Surely my favorite part about school was the challenge of learning new things. Surely my favorite part about school was getting back the assignments and tests I'd spent so much time preparing for. Surely I was not an air-brained no mind teenage girl with "Boyfriend" on her mind 24/7.
Looking back, if I'm totally honest, I liked school. I liked learning. I liked the environment. I liked the library. I liked doing projects. I liked putting together the yearbook. Or planning the grad weekend. But what made school great, was seeing him everyday. And holding hands.
To any teen girl reading this - I was an idiot. Don't make "the guy" the best part of school. Even if I wasn't divorced I would say this. Have lots of reasons to love school, or love life for that matter... don't hang it all on a guy. It is possible to be deliriously happy and endlessly content without a boyfriend. I know this. I am not loved by a special someone. And am managing to live to tell the tale.
Whoa. That was a rabbit trail. Ask me about school. And watch me go on and on about boyfriends. Give me a microphone and I'll preach.
I'll stop now.

Bravo, thank you for sharing your opinions. I hope the many high school girls that read this will really hear you when you say "don't make your whole high school experience about some guy".
Would you like to come share your story sometime with some girls in my family room sometime? No I'm serious, I would love that.
