Rolls a Cookin

Two readers asked that I post my Roll Kuchen recipe. This is what I have written down in my book:

2 eggs
1.5 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup milk
2 Tbsp melted butter
Enough flour to make a soft dough.
Roll thin and deep fry in fat.

Oh those Mennos know how to write recipes.

The above recipe made enough kuchens for Drew and me for a dinner with Watermelon. (With a few leftovers for breakfast with syrup.)

I doubled the recipe tonight because Max and Clint were home for supper too.

I'd guess I used about 4 cups of flour? Maybe? I really don't know. I just had Drew pick up the bag and dump a bunch on top of the other mixed up ingredients.

I divided the dough into three balls and rolled each ball out individually. Once it was flat and thin, I cut it into rectangles of about 2" x 4" in size. The I cut a slit in the middle of each rectangle and twisted one end through the hole. This part is not important and hard to describe so don't worry about it.

I don't think Max will eat these ever again. "Globs of dough, deep fried in fat. Ugh."

I fry those globs of dough in Crisco oil at burner heat level 6 /10 on my stove.

Yeah. It does sound gross.
I eat mine sprinkled with salt.
The boys sprinkle a dusting of icing sugar on them and then dip them into either corn syrup or maple syrup.
Yeah, I know.

It's a summer meal. We have it twice a year.
Don't you wish you were Mennonite?

That is THE BEST meal of the whole summer. So glad I'm Mennonite. A little extra colesterol every now and then never hurt anyone. We eat ours plain or with Rogers syrup. Mmmmm

What the hell, that's a family recipe.

I lived with a nutty old german mennonite lady for two years in university and she made these. We had them with icing sugar on them and I really liked them. Brings back memories.

Thanks so much for the recipe...can hardly wait to give it a try (i'm the one who hasn't tried it since I was very young). In my opinion the goodness of the watermelon probably neutralizes the fat in the roll kuchen so it's like eating nothing at all!!!
