Women On My Mind

Have you read A Thousand Splendid Suns? Did it make you angry that women are abused like that? Did it make you want to punch someone?

Tonight was book club night and we talked about women. Coincidentally it was International Woman's Day on March 6 and both Carolyn and I had read this blog about Things Women Want . If you're not much of a link clinker (yeesh. Just how lazy are you?) - the part that caught my eye was this: (Remember, this was written by Prof. John Stackhouse, a professor, author, husband and father to 3 sons)

Women want freedom from interruption in conversation. Men looking women in the eyes during conversation. Men noticing that women are trying to get into the conversation in the first place.
(Believe me, guys: We all have something to learn here. I certainly have had a lot to learn here.)

In the book we were discussing, those women in Afghanistan wanted freedom from being beaten. Freedom to leave their homes. Freedom to get an education. Freedom to live without fear.

Here in Canada, we want to get into the conversation.
That sounds whiny, doesn't it?

Whiny or not, we had a really good discussion on women, our fathers, our sons, our levels of confidence ... yeah. I just love book club nights.

Three things I'm thankful for:
1. Kim brought Irish Soda Bread tonight - our nod to St. Patrick's Day. Delish.
2. Daylight Savings
3. I will never have a gallbladder attack again.

Shalom,
