Good Thing Gas Is So Cheap

"Mom?" Drew asks.
"Yeah?" I answer.
"Can I drive?"
"Sure."
"Really?"
"Sure."
"You're not just saying that?"
"Nope."
"So I can drive? On the road?"
"Sure."
"I can drive the Durango on a road?"
"Sure."
"What road?"
"What road do you think?"
"How about at Lindell Beach?"
"That's what I was thinking."
"When?"
"Whenever you want."
"Soon?"
"Sure. We could go up tomorrow if you want."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I need to pick up the pressure washer an-"
Then he remembers it's his role to argue with me whenever I suggest we go to the lake.
"NO WAY. Why do you always do that? You can't make me go. I hate going up there!"
"Uh, Drew? This was your idea. If you want to drive the truck, that's where you can. I'm just saying, seeing we're going to be in the neighbourhood anyway, we might as well pic-"
"No. You always make me do things. I never have a say."

That was Saturday.
We did not go up to the cabin on the weekend.

Today after work:
"I need to get that pressure washer, we should go up to the cabin. It's a great day."
"I suppose you're going to force me to go with you?"
"Nope. If you don't want to go, that's fine."
"You'll go without me?"
"No. I'm getting the pressure washer so that you can earn some money cleaning the driveway and patio. It's too heavy for me to lift into the truck and besides, I don't want to schelp around the basement looking for it. If you don't want to go we won't."
"So, you're forcing me?"
"We can go whenever you want. I'm not doing it for you."
"Fine then. It's not like you're giving me a choice."

We listened to and discussed the brilliance of Pink Floyd for an hour. As I turned onto Lindell Road, I pulled over and got out. He slipped into the driver's seat and I got in on the other side.
He drove down the slope and was going toward the cabin when I made a suggestion.
"Do you want to go up and down the sidestreets?"
"OK."

After we loaded up the pressure washer, I walked over to the gate. After he drove through, I locked up and got in beside him.

He was driving towards the main road, when I said, "Do you want to circle around and go through the streets again?"
"OK. "

He went through the sleepy community one more time. Just as he was finishing up he looked at me and said, "Do you have to be here? Can't you get out?"

Three things I'm thankful for:
1. The magical sight on the lake this afternoon. Honestly. You should check out the lake right in front of the cabin at 4 pm. Thousands and thousands of white birds. Maybe even zilliions. Breathtaking. Like something you'd see on those Planet Earth DVD's.

2. Fun weekend plans.

3. Imagination.

Shalom,

Seriously!
Was I like that when I was a teenager? I'll have to ask my mom.

I read the whole thing with a smile, then burst out laughing at the end. You brighten many people's day by capturing the moment with your gift of words. Go girl. JN
